Autism and Therapy Dogs: How They Can Help

Because we have a child with Autism we have seen first hand the benefits animals can have with individuals with special needs.  In fact, this is one of the main reasons we have pursued breeding Goldendoodles.  I also homeschool my son so we are home with our dogs for the majority of the day.  The care and breeding is also incorporated into his curriculam and Autism remediation.

What is Autism?

Autism is a neurological disorder.  It affects speech/communication skills, motor and social skills.  Autism runs on a spectrum, meaning a person could be severely, moderatly or mildly affected or any where in between.  Many individuals also have co-existing condtions such as tourettes, ocd, anxiety, etc.  Even though individuals with autism have the same deficits, they are usually displayed differently from person to person.  Therefore, if you see one person with autism you have not seen them all.  This can make treatment difficult as parents must first try many different approaches before they find what works.

How autism is viewed has gone through many stages since it was first discovered in the 40's.  At first mothers were to blame and there was no hope for improvement.  It was later discovered that through specific treatment learning was possible.  Today, through years of research many believe that remediation is very possible.  This is not the same as "curing".  To date, there is no cure for Autism.  We hope one day there will be.

Ten years ago, Autism affected 1 in 10,000.  Today, it is a staggering 1 in 150 affected.  Chances are you know someone with autism or will very soon.

Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs can provide many benefits to individuals with special needs. Service dogs can help aide those with physical disabilities so they can move around in society with more independence.  Dogs can even be trained to help alert a person who has seizures that one is about to come on. There are many agencies that can help if you are interested in being provided with a therapy dog, either for yourself or someone you love.

Lola now lives with a great family! She will not only be their companion but also a service dog for their child.
