Goldendoodles for Autism Therapy

At Farmer Doodles, we take pride in breeding quality Goldendoodle dogs. Our dogs are raised with us and receive a lot of love and attention. Goldendoodles are wonderfully loveable dogs that shed very little, if any at all, and are considered to be a low allergy breed. They are loyal, social and love to play, making them excellent family pets. They are also extremely intelligent and intuitive, which makes them very easy to train. These qualities also make them wonderful as autism therapy dogs.

What Exactly Is a Goldendoodle?

A Goldendoodle is a mixed breed, being a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. There are a couple of different types. An F1 Goldendoodle is 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Poodle. An F1B Goldendoodle, on the other hand, is a Goldendoodle bred with a Poodle. The coat of a Goldendoodle can range from shaggy to curly, and everything in between.

A Golden Retriever is known for its loveable nature as well as its intelligence and good manners. Poodles are known for both their intelligence and ability to learn. These traits, rolled into one dog, help to make the Goldendoodle an exceptional autism therapy dog.

More About Autism

Autism is a neurological disorder that runs a spectrum, meaning that it can be severe or it can be barely noticeable. Autism can affect an individual’s behavior differently, but it shows itself by affecting a person’s ability to speak, their communication and social skills and even their motor skills. While there is no cure, autism can be treated, which is a far cry from when it was first discovered and thought to be untreatable and the fault of the mother. It affects approximately every 1 in 150 people.

How Can Goldendoodles Help?

Therapy dogs have been shown to help those with autism. They are there to help people by providing love and comfort during difficult times, be it boredom, anxiety, depression, trouble socializing, or speech disorders. They can help keep an autistic child more calm and help to prevent outbursts or meltdowns. Autism therapy dogs are considered to be service dogs, and can be specifically trained to keep their human safe and to alert to dangerous situations. They can warn the parents of an autistic child that he or she is upset, or even be trained to alert parents in the event of something serious, like a seizure. Goldendoodles, with their loyalty, loving nature, intelligence and capacity for learning, make them excellent therapy dogs.

Our goal at Farmer Doodles is to breed well-tempered, healthy Goldendoodles. To ensure their health, we perform careful testing on our dogs’ eyes, hips and heart.
